Role of the Housing in a Tractor's Front Axle

The front axle housing is the casing that supports and protects the front transmission components. The central housing contains the bevel gear set and the differential; at its ends, the axle shafts connect to the kingpins and the wheel reducers. It also serves as an oil reservoir and absorbs the loads from the front loader and attached implements. A crack or stripped thread leads to leaks, followed by rapid wear of bearings and gears. Watch for oil stains beneath the axle, a drop in oil level between changes, or bearing noise when turning: these signs warrant inspection of the front axle housing before internal components are damaged.

Many manufacturers equip their tractors with front axles supplied by axle makers like Carraro, ZF, or Dana. Two different tractor brands may share the same housing model, while two versions of the same model might have different ones. A Carraro front axle housing generally does not fit in place of a ZF housing, even on tractors with similar power. To identify the part, note the reference on the axle's data plate and the tractor's serial number. These details enable our technicians to find a compatible front axle housing among the dismantled tractors. Also specify the precise part needed: central housing, lateral housing, or reducer housing on the kingpin side, as these elements are sold separately depending on the axle.

Inspections of Used Front Axle Housings

Every front axle housing sourced from dismantling is cleaned and inspected in our workshop: checking for cracks, thread condition, flatness of gasket surfaces, and bearing seats. Before assembly, clean the gasket surfaces and verify the housing reference against the tractor’s serial number. When fitting, install new bearings and oil seals, and use the type and amount of oil recommended by the manufacturer.
