Used Rear Axle Bevel Gear Set

62 available products

A whistling sound that rises with engine speed, a clicking noise on every throttle response: on a tractor, these axle noises often come from the bevel gear set. The pinion and ring gear are factory-matched and must be replaced as a pair. TMC Bejenne removes these pairs from dismantled machines, inspects the gear teeth in our workshop, and offers them at reduced prices within the used rear axle range.

Bevel Gear Set: The Right-Angle Drive of the Rear Axle

The bevel gear set receives the rotation from the longitudinal drive shaft and transfers it at a 90° angle to the wheels. This angle drive includes a reduction ratio: the axle ratio, determined by the number of teeth on the ring gear and pinion. The ring gear is bolted to the differential housing, which then distributes torque between the two half-shafts. All the traction force thus passes through this small contact surface.

Bevel Gear Sets Available at TMC Bejenne

  • Pinion and ring gear sold as matched pairs, as they were originally operated together.
  • Tractors from Case IH , John Deere , New Holland , and Massey Ferguson .
  • Series from Renault , Claas , Fendt , and Deutz-Fahr depending on availability.
  • Telescopic handlers from Manitou and Merlo , where the rear axle is powered.
  • Original machine details identified on each listing: brand, model, year.
  • Gear teeth and bearings checked in our workshop before sale.

Axle Ratio: Choosing the Correct Bevel Gear Set

Two different bevel gear sets may fit into the same housing but have different ratios. The ratio is calculated by dividing the number of teeth on the ring gear by those on the pinion. On a four-wheel drive tractor, it needs to match the front axle ratio: a mismatch causes both axles to work against each other and causes tire wear. For front pairs, see the front axle bevel gear sets range. Provide us with the model, serial number, and if readable, the reference engraved on the ring gear.

Rear Axle Bevel Gear Set Adjustment: Control Points

  • Pinion height, adjusted using the original shims.
  • Backlash, measured with a dial gauge on the ring gear.
  • Preload of pinion and housing bearings.
  • Gear tooth contact pattern verified with dye before assembly.
  • Fresh axle oil, at the correct level and meeting manufacturer specifications.

What Causes Wear on a Bevel Gear Set

Lubrication plays a crucial role. Degraded axle oil or low level deprives the teeth of lubrication, causing them to pit within a few seasons. A pinion seal leak often goes unnoticed. Incorrect bearing preload on reassembly leads to the same outcome with whistling noises within the first hours. Once excessive backlash develops, vibrations spread to the differential and then to the rear axle housing. If several components are affected, a complete rear axle assembly reduces disassembly work.

It is the pair made up of the pinion and ring gear, mounted at a right angle inside the axle. It converts the rotation of the drive shaft into wheel rotation and reduces speed by increasing torque. On a tractor, the bevel gear set handles all the traction force: it is one of the most heavily stressed components of the rear axle.

A bevel gear provides an angle drive between two intersecting shafts, usually at 90°. Its teeth are cut on a cone, allowing directional change. In an agricultural axle, the bevel gear set has spiral bevel teeth: quieter and more durable, but requiring precise alignment of the pinion and ring gear.

A load-induced whistling noise points to the bevel gear set. A knocking noise during turns or acceleration usually signals a worn differential. Add to that oil leaks, play in the rear wheels, vibrations, or a tractor pulling to one side. Drain the oil and inspect for metal filings before wear spreads.
