Tractor rear axle or agricultural rear axle housing: what's the difference?

On an agricultural tractor, the rear axle is not just a supporting axle but a drive axle housing: a casing that receives torque from the gearbox, the differential, and half-shafts to the wheels. This is called a drive axle or rear axle housing, featured in our rear tractor axle range: a broken half-shaft can be replaced without changing the entire axle housing. On a combine harvester, baler, or trailer, the rear wheel axle is generally a load-bearing and steering axle: it supports the machine, steers the wheels, and sets the ground clearance, without transmitting power—except in 4-wheel drive versions.

Rear steering assembly for combine harvester

The rear assembly of a combine harvester includes the axle, pivots, spindles, linkages, and steering cylinder. It supports the weight of the full grain tank and absorbs shocks at field edges. Over time, pivot bushings loosen, spindles wear out, and the axle can bend after impacts. On machines fitted with a rear drive axle, a hydraulic motor also powers the wheels: verify this before ordering, as the two versions are not interchangeable.

Rear axle: inspection points

  • Straightness of the axle beam and absence of cracks at mounting points.
  • Play in pivots and condition of bushings.
  • Bearings and spindle fits, hub sealing.
  • Track width, mounting spacing, and hub diameter, specific to each model.
  • Simple or drive version, with or without wheel motor.

Tractor rear axle: differential, final drives, and brakes

On the tractor, the rear axle receives torque from the gearbox via the bevel gear, then the differential distributes it between the two wheels. The differential lock couples both sides to handle slippery terrain. Final drives, planetary gear reducers located at the axle ends, multiply torque just before the wheels. Oil-immersed disc brakes and half-shafts mounted on tapered roller bearings with oil seals complete the assembly. Clean, suitable lubrication oil is essential for the lifespan of all these parts.

It remains significantly lower than a new original part, which is often slow to obtain. The axle is the assembly that supports the wheels and connects them to the chassis. On a tractor, the front axle is often steering and sometimes driven, with a front axle housing in 4-wheel drive models. The rear axle, or rear axle housing, is always driven: it transmits power to the wheels via the differential, final drives, and half-shafts, and carries most of the weight and lifting. There is the load-bearing axle, which supports the machine without steering it; the steering axle, which orients the wheels via a steering mechanism; and the drive axle, which transmits power. A single axle can combine these functions: the rear axle of a combine is often load-bearing and steering, sometimes driven; a trailer axle is simply load-bearing.

Watch for abnormal play in pivots or bearings, a groaning noise under load, an overheating spindle or hub, oil leaks at seals, and uneven tire wear. On a drive axle housing, clunking sounds in turns often indicate a worn differential. A wheel lift test confirms the diagnosis before replacement.
