The Complete Threshing Cylinder: Core Component of a Combine Harvester 

On a combine harvester, the threshing cylinder is a transverse drum with a standard diameter of about 600 mm, composed of multiple side plates holding between 6 and 8 threshing bars (ribbed bars). It strikes the crop against the concave (fixed perforated basket). Grains fall through the sieves, while the straw continues to the shakers for final separation.

The rotational speed is adjustable between 400 and 1,200 rpm via a hydraulically controlled belt variator to adapt to each crop type. A complete threshing cylinder includes the cylinder shaft, the side stars (side plates), the threshing bars, the mounting studs, the factory dynamic balancing, and — depending on the brand — the pulley or the drive variator. This technology equips the vast majority of European combine harvesters in use.

When to Replace Your Combine Harvester’s Complete Threshing Cylinder?

Several symptoms require intervention: vibrations at high speeds, significant wear on threshing bars (loss of ribs), broken side star, shaft cracks, end bearing play, or following major damage (large foreign object in the threshing drum). For older machines (Claas Dominator, Mega, Lexion 400, John Deere series 9000, Case IH 2188, MF 30/40, NH TX), new complete threshing cylinders are rare and costly. In this case, original used parts become the best technical and economic option.

Winter maintenance is the ideal time for diagnosis: remove the inspection hatch, check bars and studs, inspect the shaft, and anticipate ordering before the harvest peak in June-July.
