Its operation is based on a simple principle: the hydraulic motor converts the energy from pressurized fluid into rotary mechanical motion transmitted by the output shaft. In a closed or open hydraulic circuit, the hydraulic pump generates flow, the hydraulic distributor directs the flow, and the motor delivers power in rotation. • Displacement: large for slow, high-torque motors (wheel drives, conveyors); small for fast motors (fans, shredders)
• Rotational speed: from a few tens of rpm for orbital motors up to several thousand for gear motors
• Operating pressures: must be considered relative to the hydraulic pump capacities of the tractor or carrier machine
• Output shaft: type, diameter, and keyway must match the driven component or intermediate gearbox
• Rotation direction: single or double direction depending on the application
• Nominal flow: verify against the flow available at your tractor or self-propelled machine's hydraulic outlet

Gear, Vane, Orbital Danfoss or Poclain Piston Motors

Several hydraulic motor technologies are found on agricultural equipment. Gear motors are simple and rugged, suited to high-speed applications such as cleaning fans. Vane motors, less common in agriculture, are used in some medium-speed drives. Orbital motors (gerotor type, Danfoss or Sauer technologies) provide high torque at low speed for conveyors, feed belts, and cutting units. Axial or radial piston motors, like Poclain, deliver the highest power and equip combine harvester hydrostatic transmissions.

Each technology is a trade-off among output power, compactness, volumetric efficiency, and cost: the choice of a motor primarily depends on the driven component.
