How a Combine Harvester Works: With Shakers or Rotor

Behind the threshing drum and concave, a shaker combine passes the straw over 4 to 6 sieves mounted on two crankshafts. Their alternating motion aerates the straw and causes the remaining grains to fall toward the cleaning system, its sieves and screens, before the straw exits in a windrow. Rotor combines replace shakers with an axial rotor, sometimes supplemented by rotary separators, which separate by centrifugal force. Shaker machines maintain the advantage of less broken straw, favored in livestock farming in many French regions, along with good grain quality when the separation area is properly adjusted.

Shakers for Small or Older Combine Harvesters like John Deere

On a small combine or an older machine, such as a John Deere 1065 or 1550, a Claas Dominator, a New Holland TX, or a Massey Ferguson Beta series, shakers may crack at their mounting points, and their wooden or rubber bearings can become loose. Manufacturers no longer always provide these references, making the original used part the only solution to keep the machine operational. Make a note of the number of shakers, the model year of the combine, and the length and spacing of the bearings: these dimensions vary from one model to another, even within a series.

Grain Loss and Work Rate: When to Replace a Shaker

A cracked shaker or worn bearing reduces the amplitude of movement: straw moves forward in clumps, separation is poor, and grain loss increases at the rear. This problem worsens under damp harvesting conditions, reducing throughput. Before replacing a shaker, check the adjustment of the threshing drum and concave, the condition of the crankshafts, and the feed by the cutter bar: underutilized engine power or an overloaded cleaning shoe also stresses shakers. A well-serviced machine recovers optimal performance across the full width.
