Role of the reel on the cutterbar

The reel is the rotating component positioned above the cutterbar. Its teeth, made of steel or nylon, catch the stalks, tilt them toward the blade, then push the cut crop toward the feed auger. Its rotation speed, height, and forward movement are adjusted from the cab to match crop density. A properly set reel reduces grain shatter in wheat and rapeseed and gathers lodged cereals without clogging. On a sunflower header, it is often replaced by specific fingers or plates.

Teeth, arms, and star: used reel parts

Reels are often repaired part by part. Teeth break on contact with the ground or stones, arms bend in hedges, and the central star ovalizes and becomes loose. Adjusting the reel according to the crop: cereals, rapeseed, sunflower

In standing cereals, the reel rotates slightly faster than the combine's forward speed and engages the stalks below the ear. In lodged crops, it is advanced and lowered, with teeth angled backward to lift the stalks. In rapeseed, reduced speed limits pod shatter. A misaligned reel, missing tooth, or bent arm distorts these settings: check the condition of the part before adjusting the machine parameters.
