What Are the Different Fuel Circuits in a Diesel Engine?
The fuel supply system of a diesel engine consists of three distinct parts, each with its own components and typical failure modes.
- Low-pressure circuit: diesel tank 12 fuel filter 12 feed pump (or lift pump). This circuit supplies filtered, consistent-flow fuel to the injection pump. Most air leaks and priming issues on vintage tractors occur in this section.
- High-pressure circuit: injection pump 12 high-pressure line 12 injectors. This circuit operates at very high pressures and cannot tolerate contamination (water, dust, particles). On a vintage tractor, an old injection pump may suffer from current fuels, whose very low sulfur content reduces lubrication.
- Return circuit: excess un-injected fuel returns to the tank via return lines. Bubbles in this return indicate air ingress into the injection system.
Understanding this setup helps quickly locate faults: priming problems almost always stem from the low-pressure circuit; unstable engine operation or abnormal smoke suggests issues in the high-pressure injection circuit.
What Fuel Should Be Used for a Vintage Tractor?
Fuel selection is particularly important for vintage tractors, designed for fuels very different in composition from today's GNR (Non-Road Diesel).
GNR vs White Diesel: What's the Difference?
Contrary to popular belief, GNR and road diesel are technically the same fuel. Both comply with EN 590 standard: same cetane number, same sulfur content (max 10 mg/kg), same biofuel blend (up to 7% FAME, known as B7).
The difference is tax-related, not technical. Since November 1, 2011, GNR replaced heating oil as the regulated fuel for agricultural and forestry tractors. Colored red and containing a tracer, it benefits from a reduced excise tax (TICPE) reserved for professional non-road uses: agriculture, forestry, public works.
What this means for private owners: owners of vintage tractors not used for agricultural activities must use road diesel—the "white diesel" used by farms. Using untaxed GNR outside its permitted context constitutes tax fraud, detectable by chemical tracing during inspections. This is a legal, not a technical, matter.
Using GNR on Vintage Tractors — Private or Professional: Specific Precautions
The fuel these engines were designed for was neither GNR nor white diesel but heating oil, discontinued in 2011. The differences are substantial.

Three practical consequences for vintage tractors, regardless of the current fuel used:
Loss of lubricating power. Sulfur in heating oil lubricated inline injection pumps in vintage tractors—Renault, Fiat, Ford, David Brown. Its near disappearance accelerates wear on pump components. A lubricating additive is often recommended for these machines.
Presence of biofuel. FAME has detergent properties and lower long-term stability than old heating oils. In the presence of water, it promotes microorganism growth, producing sludge that clogs filters and damages injection pumps.
Increased sensitivity to storage. Modern fuels have shorter shelf life. This is the main aggravating factor for machines rarely used.

Storage: The Mostly Overlooked Factor
Bacterial growth and water presence don’t come from the fuel itself but from storage conditions:
- A partially filled tank or container condenses water during each day/night cycle;
- Water gathers at the lowest point, creating an interface where microorganisms thrive;
- Fuel stored for several months degrades, especially when it contains FAME.
Hence, three important practices for vintage tractors:
- Store with a full tank to minimize air volume and thus condensation;
- Drain the tank’s lowest point before restarting;
- Replace the filter after the first refills: new fuel dissolves old deposits and carries them to the filter. This is a standard precaution after long inactivity.
What Are the Symptoms of Air Leaks in the Diesel Circuit?
Air leaks are the most frequent fault in vintage tractor fuel circuits. They present characteristic symptoms often mistaken for injection problems:
- Loss of prime after a few hours: the circuit no longer maintains fuel column, air enters hoses, cutting fuel supply.
- Starting difficult or impossible without manual pumping: air in the injection circuit blocks supply to the injection pump.
- Irregular running, surges, and cuts: engine receives a mix of fuel and air causing misfires and unstable speed.
- Visible bubbles in return fuel: tractors with transparent return lines show continuous air bubbles confirming air ingress in low-pressure circuit.
- Engine stalls under load: air ingress worsens under vacuum, cutting fuel supply when demand is highest.
- Water presence in fuel: water from condensation in old tanks or prolonged GNR storage worsens supply issues and promotes internal corrosion.
How to Bleed Air from a Tractor’s Diesel Circuit?
Bleeding the diesel circuit is essential after replacing a fuel filter, working on hoses, or loss of prime after long inactivity. Without proper bleeding, the engine won’t start or will quickly stall.
The classic method for a vintage tractor involves these steps: open the bleed screws on the fuel filter, then operate the manual primer (on the feed pump) until fuel runs without bubbles. Close screws as clean fuel appears. Repeat for each bleed point in logical order—filter first, then injection pump—then try to start. If the engine stalls after a few seconds, air remains in the injection circuit: repeat. For long-inactive vintage tractors, expect two or three bleeding cycles before a clean start.
On a vintage Renault or John Deere, bleed screws are usually on the side of the fuel filter and on the feed pump inlet. On a Massey Ferguson or David Brown, the layout is similar but exact locations vary by series.
Parts to Prioritize Replacing in the Vintage Tractor Diesel Circuit
In most cases, effective restoration relies on simple components available as used parts:
- Fuel hoses: the leading cause of air leaks. They become porous with age, admitting air without visible leaks. Replace systematically on any vintage tractor with unknown condition.
- Seals and gaskets: fittings, filter seals, hollow screws. A cracked gasket alone can cause total loss of prime.
- Diesel filter: replace during any restoration—and after first refills with GNR if the tractor was unused a long time. Filter clogged with degraded GNR sludge is a common cause of engine failure on vintage tractors.
- Feed pump: a worn pump fails to deliver sufficient fuel. Frequent wear part on rarely used French vintage tractors.
- Diesel tank: inspect for internal corrosion, water presence, or degraded GNR sludge before restarting.

Loss of prime after few hours, impossible starting without manual pumping, irregular running with surges, visible bubbles in return fuel, engine stall under load. These symptoms typically come from the low-pressure circuit (hoses, seals, filter), not the injectors.
