Question 1

What is the difference between the upper and lower sieve on a New Holland combine?

Accepted Answer

The upper sieve (chaff sieve) receives the grain flow mixed with fine straw after the shakers or rotor. Its wider and adjustable slats regulate the passage of whole grains. The lower sieve (grain sieve), finer in mesh, performs the final sorting: clean grain proceeds to the grain auger, and unseparated elements return to the return circuit. These two parts work in tandem and wear differently depending on the crop and settings: an upper sieve closed too much will overload the lower sieve with return elements, while an overly open lower sieve allows impurities into the delivered grain.

Question 2

How to adjust the sieve on a New Holland CX 860?

Accepted Answer

Adjustment of the sieve on a New Holland CX 860 is done from the cab (electric control on recent models) or manually on older versions. Typical settings vary by crop: winter cereals (wheat, barley) between 8 and 14 mm for the upper sieve, 5 to 8 mm for the lower sieve; peas and legumes require wider openings. The optimal setting minimizes both grain losses in the straw outlet and impurities in the hopper. If your sieve no longer adjusts properly despite corrections, it generally indicates a bent slat or a faulty adjustment mechanism.
