Upper and lower sieve: function and wear signs

The cleaning system of a New Holland combine harvester relies on two superimposed sieves, each with a specific role in the separation chain:

  • Upper sieve (chaff sieve): the first sieve that grain passes through after the shakers or rotor. Its adjustable slats allow the sorting of whole grains while retaining fine straw and cobs. A worn or warped upper sieve lets impurities pass to the lower sieve and increases the load on the return elements.
  • Lower sieve (grain sieve): finer than the upper sieve, it performs the final sorting: clean grain falls into the grain auger, unseparated elements return via the return circuit. A clogged or bent lower sieve causes a high impurity rate in the delivered grain.
  • Wear signs to watch for: presence of clean grain in the straw output, broken grains or foreign bodies in the hopper, inability to properly adjust with usual settings, bent slats, or broken retaining hooks.

New Holland combine pre-sieve: function and adjustment

The pre-sieve is positioned upstream of the upper and lower sieves on the cleaning table. Its role is to remove the coarsest elements — long straw, cobs, unthreshed whole ears — before the mass reaches the fine sieves. On New Holland TX and TF shaker series, the pre-sieve is a fixed or slightly adjustable part with an opening adapted to the crop. On CX and CR series, some models feature electric adjustment of the pre-sieve from the cab, allowing in-field adjustments without stopping the machine. Signs of an end-of-life pre-sieve include rapid clogging of upper and lower sieves, frequent blockages at the bottom of the table, or excessive return of elements. Used New Holland CX sieve: CX 820, CX 840, CX 860 series

New Holland CX combine harvesters make up the majority of our used sieve stock. The CX series is divided into two reference groups based on the number of shakers, determining sieve dimensions and surface area:

  • CX 5 shakers (CX 720, CX 740, CX 760, CX 820): smaller sieve surface with proportional cleaning table width. The CX 820 is the most commonly requested series in this group.
  • CX 6 shakers (CX 840, CX 860, CX 8080): wider cleaning table with correspondingly sized sieves. TMC Bejenne holds a large stock for the CX 860 (the most represented model at our dismantling yard), with upper and lower sieves available immediately.

Used New Holland TX and TF sieves

The TX and TF series represent several generations of conventional shaker-type New Holland combine harvesters, still widely used on French farms. TMC Bejenne offers used sieves and pre-sieves for the main series:

  • TX 30 to TX 36: entry-level TX series with medium-size cleaning table. These parts are rarer as machines age; contact us to verify real-time availability.
  • TX 62 to TX 68: high-end TX series, the most common on the French market. TMC Bejenne holds significant stock for TX 66 and TX 68, the most dismantled models in the range. Upper and lower sieves TX 66/67/68 share the same dimensions.
  • TF 42 and TF 76: Twin Flow series with two axial separation rotors (technology distinct from CX/CR). TF sieves have unique characteristics, not interchangeable with TX series. Stock mainly available for TF 76.

Used New Holland CR sieves: Twin Rotor series

The CR series (CR 960, CR 980, CR 9070, CR 9090) use two axial rotors that simultaneously thresh and separate without shakers. The cleaning table thus receives a more regular and finer grain flow than shaker machines, altering sieve stress. CR sieves are generally wider than equivalent CX series sieves, with reinforced frames to handle large rotor flows. The lower sieve (grain sieve), finer in mesh, performs the final sorting: clean grain proceeds to the grain auger, and unseparated elements return to the return circuit. These two parts work in tandem and wear differently depending on the crop and settings: an upper sieve closed too much will overload the lower sieve with return elements, while an overly open lower sieve allows impurities into the delivered grain.

Adjustment of the sieve on a New Holland CX 860 is done from the cab (electric control on recent models) or manually on older versions. Typical settings vary by crop: winter cereals (wheat, barley) between 8 and 14 mm for the upper sieve, 5 to 8 mm for the lower sieve; peas and legumes require wider openings.
