Q: What is the difference between a New Holland round baler and a square baler?

A round baler (BR 7070) rolls the crop into a cylindrical bale and binds it with netting or plastic film — no twine knotters involved. A square baler (BB 960, BB 9070, BB 9080, BB 9090) compresses the crop into rectangular bales using a piston and ties them with twine by mechanical knotters. Binding parts for these two machine types are completely different and not interchangeable.

Question 1

How does the binding system on a New Holland square baler work?

Accepted Answer

Binding starts automatically when the bale reaches the programmed length. Needles descend into the pressing channel to deliver twine to the mechanical knotters. Each knotter grabs the two twine strands with a rotating duck bill, forms a loop, and cuts it with an integrated knife. This cycle repeats for every bale. On New Holland BB 960 to BB 9090 models, 4 to 6 knotters operate simultaneously. The condition of duck bills, needle alignment, and twine quality directly affect binding reliability.

Question 2

What are the signs of a faulty knotter on a New Holland BB?

Accepted Answer

The most common signs are: a bale exiting unbound or with a knot that slips when handled, abnormal snapping noises during the cycle, twine breaking repeatedly without excessive tension, or a jammed duck bill with visible plant residue. A dry-run test (binding cycle without a bale) helps observe each knotter's behavior to identify the faulty one.

Question 3

Accepted Answer

Question 4

How to maintain the binding system of a New Holland baler to avoid breakdowns during the season?

Accepted Answer

At the start of the season: clean knotters and needles from dry hay and plant residues, check duck bills for wear (helical parts), lubricate trigger cams, adjust twine tensioners, and check needle alignment relative to the channel. During the season: monitor knot quality on the first bales from each field and clean knotters after every workday, especially in wet or dirty hay conditions.
