How to tell if a hydraulic cylinder is worn out?

An aging hydraulic cylinder leaks along the rod, loses its position under load, or moves in jerks. A scratched or bent rod quickly damages the seals. On a lift, a tool slowly lowering to the ground often indicates a cylinder or valve that no longer holds pressure.

Is it possible to repair a hydraulic cylinder?

Yes, when the issue is only with the seals: replacing the seals often restores the cylinder’s function. If the rod is scratched, pitted, or bent, or if the body is damaged, repairs usually cost more than a tested, original used cylinder. Our technicians are available for advice at 05 86 24 00 26 .

What causes a hydraulic cylinder to lose pressure?

Most often, worn piston seals allow oil to pass between chambers. A faulty valve or distributor, hydraulic circuit leaks, or overheated oil can also be causes. Check the hydraulic circuit before replacing the lift cylinder.

What are the three common types of hydraulic cylinders?

There are three types of cylinders: single-acting, which extend under oil pressure and retract by load; double-acting, which operate in both directions; and telescopic cylinders, with multiple nested tubes, used on dump trailers. Additional lift cylinders are generally single-acting.
