What is the role of the inspection hatch on a combine harvester?

An inspection hatch, also called an inspection or maintenance hatch, provides quick access inside the threshing drum, the concave, or the separating components without heavy dismantling. It is an essential part for routine tasks: post-harvest cleaning, visual inspection of the bars and pegs, checking the concaves, bearing lubrication, and clearing blockages during field operations.

Usually made of reinforced folded sheet metal, sometimes equipped with a sealing gasket, a hinge, and a quick-lock mechanism, the hatch withstands impacts from abrasive dust, foreign objects thrown by the threshing drum, and temperature changes. Any deformation or loss compromises the drum’s sealing and causes invisible grain loss from the cabin.

External inspection hatch: the most exposed part of the threshing drum

On a combine harvester, there are two types: internal inspection hatches, accessible after removing covers or side panels, and external inspection hatches, accessible directly from the ground or service walkway. It is the latter—visible, painted in manufacturer colors, and opened several times a day during the season—that accounts for most replacement requests.

The external inspection hatch is subject to three types of incidents. Field incidents: impact with a trailer during unloading, snagging on low branches, stones thrown by wheels. Transport incidents: improperly locked cover after cleaning, road vibrations, hatch dropping between fields. Finally, gradual wear: worn hinges, broken latches, crushed sealing gasket after hundreds of hours.

For older models (Claas Dominator, Lexion 400, John Deere 9540, Case IH 2188, NH TX), the original manufacturer external hatch is no longer produced new. Original used parts then become the only option to maintain factory design, original sealing, and manufacturer color.

Our parts for your combine

The external hatch opens directly from the outside of the machine (threshing drum, shakers, cleaning system). The internal hatch is accessible only after removing side covers or body panels. Both types are available in our catalog.

Unless otherwise specified, the hatch is supplied with its original gasket if in good condition. We always specify the gasket condition in the quote; a new gasket is recommended to ensure sealing.

Technically, no European or French regulation explicitly requires an inspection hatch on a combine harvester. However, manufacturers include them from the design stage as they enable access to internal components for adjustments and routine maintenance.

Its absence may engage the operator's liability in case of accident during maintenance, according to general workplace safety rules defined by labor law. A machine driving on the road without its original hatches may also face issues during conformity checks.

For CUMA and ETA, subject to enhanced safety obligations toward their employees, maintaining all original technical features—including hatches—is an essential obligation.

Unlike building hatches which follow fixed standards (200x200 mm, 300x300 mm, or 600x600 mm), inspection hatches for combine harvesters do not follow any universal standard. Each manufacturer defines dimensions based on the hatch’s location on the machine and access requirements to internal components.

Dimensions usually range between 300 x 200 mm and 600 x 400 mm, depending on whether it is a threshing drum hatch, shaker access, or cleaning system opening. A Claas Lexion will not have the same dimensions as a New Holland CX or John Deere S700.

This is precisely why the manufacturer reference remains the only reliable criterion for ordering the correct part—a difference of a few millimeters is enough to compromise the drum’s sealing.
