PTO Drive Shaft: Role and Operation on the Tractor
The PTO drive shaft — or PTO shaft — is the transmission component that connects the tractor's power take-off to the attached implement: flail mower, rotavator, mower, spreader, water pump, or any other powered tool. It consists of a telescopic shaft with two sliding half-tubes (splined or polygonal profiles), two universal joints with crosses at each end, and a protective plastic sleeve. Its length varies according to the tractor-implement distance, and its section is defined by the transmitted torque and the PTO profile (6 splines, 21 splines, or other depending on the tractor).
On high-inertia implements — flail mower, stone crusher — the shaft is exposed to significant torque peaks that rapidly wear crosses and yokes. Types of Used Agricultural Drive Shafts Available
- Standard shaft (simple crosses): versatile shaft for light to medium implements — mowers, pumps, spreaders, soil working tools — available in various tube profiles and lengths

Drive Shaft Clutch and Torque Limiter: Safety Systems
The torque limiter protects the transmission chain between the tractor and the implement. Without it, a sudden blockage of the implement — a stone in a flail mower, a metal rod in a rotavator — turns into a damaging shock to the gearbox or the shaft itself. There are three main types of safety systems:
The friction clutch (or friction disc) is the most common: steel discs pressed by a calibrated spring transmit torque by slipping beyond the trigger threshold. Adjustable and resettable, it suits implements that frequently encounter obstacles. The shear bolt is simpler: it breaks beyond the torque limit and must be replaced after each trigger. The freewheel clutch (or freewheel coupling) allows the shaft to disengage the implement PTO in reverse rotation, protecting the mechanism during sudden braking. - Telescopic tube (telescoping part): inner or outer half-tube recovered from shafts with worn joints but intact telescopic section
- Complete universal joints: cross + bearings + circlips set for restoring a shaft mechanically sound in structure
- Friction discs: wear elements of friction clutches, available separately to avoid replacing the entire shaft
- Protective sleeve: safety plastic sheath covering the rotating shaft, mandatory by regulation — available depending on dismantling stock

To purchase a compatible used drive shaft, three measurements are needed. Length: measure with the implement hitched in working position, sleeve retracted — minimum (implement close) and maximum (implement extended) lengths define the required telescopic range. Tube profile: count the splines on your PTO and the implement PTO, or identify the profile (square, polygon). Joint type at ends: measure diameter and spacing of bearing bores on your current yokes to confirm cross compatibility. A standard shaft operates properly up to roughly 25-35° angle between the tractor and implement axes. Beyond that, the crosses transmit rotation irregularly (angular acceleration effect), causing vibrations and faster wear. A high-angle shaft is designed to work up to and beyond 80° thanks to a different joint geometry — essential on front-mounted implements, front lifts, or high-angle work configurations. The choice depends on the implement type and frequency of shocks. The shear bolt is simple, low-cost, and reliable: it breaks once, and the operator replaces it (a few minutes). It suits implements rarely encountering obstacles — spreaders, pumps, mowers on clean terrain. The friction clutch is preferable for flail mowers, stone crushers, or rotavators: it triggers and resets without intervention, allowing work to continue immediately. Its drawback is that friction discs wear and must be replaced periodically — TMC Bejenne offers these discs separately.
