How to recognize a second-hand front axle?

The second-hand front axle is made up of the same elements as the rear axle:

• a bevel gear
• a differential
• two double-hinged gimbal for the largest turning angle inside the wheel pivot
• two disc brakes
• two epicyclic gear reducers because of their small dimensions

The traction can be driven from the secondary shaft at the output of the gearbox so that the same rotation ratio between the front and rear axles is always maintained. The drive input is usually in the centre of the axle to have two half-wheel shafts on the same length. The swivel axis can:

• be the same as the one of the drive shaft. This set-up often requires the front of the tractor to be lifted to propery lubricate the axle "push ring".
• be located above the drive shaft. It is then a simple shaft set-up on "push rings", often easier to lubricate.

Second-hand front axle suspension

Suspensions are based on two different systems, known as independent arm system or suspension axle system. They all meet the same objectives, which are to improve the grip of the used tractor, reduce fuel consumption, limit pressure on the chassis and guarantee the driver's comfort.

Advantages of the suspended front axle

• suspended front axles do not require any special maintenance
• independent arm suspensions are the most efficient but also the most expensive
• the displacement and pressure management in the cylinders determine the efficiency of the suspension

Over generations of tractors, front axle suspension has become so banalise that it is now standard equipment on many tractors over 100 horsepower. All the so-called "premium" ranges are equipped with it. As for the more basic models for which the suspension axle remains an optional feature, in almost three quarters of cases, the farmer chooses to equip his tractor with it.
